At 4:43 am this date a call came in to the Fort Payne Police Department that a man with a hammer entered the South End Market which was open for business. The suspect walked through the beverage cooler area and took a carton of beer after smashing the beverage cooler door. The subject left the store and traveled north on Gault Avenue. Officers made contact with the vehicle that was travelling at a high rate of speed near 6th Street. The subject’s vehicle ran off the roadway in the 200 block of Gault Ave S striking an aluminum light in front of the Fort Payne Fire Station #2, continuing to cross the fire station parking lot then striking a small curb which sent his vehicle airborne in to the side of the old Quinn building. Joshua Christian Grant, age 25 of Altoona, was pronounced dead at the scene. ALEA, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is conducting the investigation of this accident.
